Modern Kiev is the capital of independent European state Ukraine its administrative, economical, scientific, cultural and educated centre. Ukraine is one of the biggest European countries, which occupies the territory more than 603,700 square km and its population is about 49 million people. It borders on Russia, Byelorussia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary Rumania and Moldova.
Kiev stretches for the space of more than 20 km along the picturesque banks of the biggest Ukrainian river-Dnepr. Its square consists 827 sq.km.. Kiev is one of the oldest Slavic centres, “Mother of Russian touns” so it was called in olden times, its age is more than 1500 years. The first settlements on the territory of modern Kiev appeared from 15000 till 20000 year ago.
By the ancient legend Kiev was founded by three brothers Kiy, Schek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid. They were surprised by the beauty of Dnepr’s hills, stopped to settle here and called the town in honour of the eldest brother-Kiev. A monument to the founders was erected at the Dnepr embankment in our days. The town’s place was chosen seccesfully, the high Dnepr’s slopes were perfect protection against the raids of nomad tribes.
During the time of Vladimir the Great (980-1015) government our city begins to develop especially rapidly. In order to consolidate Kiev Russ and to increase its international influence the prince Vladimir baptised the Russ in 988. Christianity and became that impulse for further development of written language and culture. During the reign of Vladimir the Great the first stone chirchdesiatinnaya chirch was built in Kiev.
Different rulers wanted to be in possession of our favourite cite. So in 1240, Kiev was attacked by Tatar Mongol Batu Khan’s horde. He made use of intestine Kiev Prince’s wars. Kiev was ruined and devastated. So Kiev’s development was kept one hundred years bade.
During the Second World War Kiev was almost completely ruined by another Fascist horde. On the 19 th of September troops of Nazi Germany entered into the city. The heroic defence of Kiev from Fascist invaders was for 72 days, but the enemy was stronger. The city was released on the 6 th of November 1943 by the price of great losses and human lifes.
On the 24 th August 1991 the Supreme Rada of Ukraine proclaimed the Declaration of Independence. On the 1 st of December 93 % of Ukrainian population spoke for the independence of Ukraine. Kiev is the capital of independent state of Ukraine at present.
The capital of Ukraine has got great cultural potential. There are more that 30 museums, about 200 unique architectural monuments, 33 theatres, enormouse quantity of constant active art exhibitions. Kiev is one of the greenest cities of the world. More that 60 parks are situated in it lime-trees and chestnuts are in blossom in its streets. The right bank of the Dnepr river is occupied by the central park of culture and rest. There is Dneprovski park on Trukhanov and other near-by islands. Kiev is the wonderful,
light city, even when the weather is dull, it casts only pleasant impressions.
